Maine Maritime Academy football program on hold
by Jeffrey B. Roth
Maine Maritime Academy football remains on indefinite suspension awaiting a COVID-19 financial impact report on various college programs and operations, including the football program, according to Emily Baer, MMA’s institutional communications manager.
In an August press release, Dr. William Brennan, president of MMA, noted that the “football program is our most expensive non-academic program. As the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are already mounting and with the prospect of a 10% curtailment in state funding, we need to review the program’s overall impact—and the impact of all programs—on our ability to continue to operate the institution.”
“We are awaiting the results of a program evaluation report by an outside consultant and, in the meantime, look forward to a full season of athletic competition this fall in other sports,” Baer added.
Mariners football has been part of campus life at MMA since 1946.
