Merchants association pauses search for new director
by Eli Forman
The Castine Merchants Association has decided to postpone its search for a new Visitor Center Director until the fall after the most recent holder of the position, Ren Albon, resigned last month after only several months in the role.
Vice President and former Visitor Center Director Alyssa Radcliff has re-assumed the position on a volunteer basis until a new director can be found.
The Visitor Center is typically open in the summer months and provides visitors with information about businesses and activities in town.
Citing safety concerns with the pandemic for the primarily volunteer staff, the Merchants Association has determined to keep the visitor center closed for the summer, and thus will not need to fill the role of director currently.
“Due to the fact that the majority of our volunteers that staff the visitor Center are not comfortable greeting visitors, who may or may not be practicing the current recommended guidelines, we have no current plans to open the visitor center this summer,” Radcliff wrote in an email to the Patriot.
Radcliff further noted that the Merchants Association is considering installing a large outdoor kiosk to hold brochures for visitors to take at their convenience.
The Merchants Association has also put together a list of Castine businesses that are open, complete with hours and contact information, that is available online at castine.me.us/welcome/.
