Castine sets Memorial Day events

by Anne Berleant

Monday, May 27, marks the national observance of Memorial Day, and Castine will honor American armed service personnel who died while serving their country. Honing close to tradition, a parade will begin at 10 a.m. on Court Street, with Tarratine Fife & Drum, flag bearers, local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops and community members marching into Castine Cemetery, where a wreath will be laid at the foot of the American flag and the Town Band will perform. Participants are requested to gather at 9:45 a.m.

The parade will then wend its way to the commons, to hear the Gettysburg Address, with a second wreath laid at the foot of the statue of the Union soldier, and then continue to the Town Dock, where a wreath will be tossed into the harbor to commemorate sailors lost at sea, and the Town Band will again perform.
