Castine Variety to honor its 100th birthday, with donuts
Snow Logan is offering a free donut with a beverage purchase to mark Castine Variety’s upcoming 100th birthday.

First opened in 1920, the Castine Variety has served up coffee, ice cream, lobster rolls and more for nearly a century. Operated throughout the decades by several owners, Snow Logan took over 10 years ago and has given a decidedly Hawaiian flavor—down to the music playing in the background—to the Castine eatery, which anchors downtown at the intersection of Main and Water streets.
“It’s hard to survive as a small business in this economy,” Logan said, sounding surprised that she has maintained the Variety for a decade. Two years ago, Logan opened an ice cream window on Main Street, renaming the establishment The Breeze and Castine Variety.
But for Logan, it’s the customers that make the long hours of serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus outside catering gigs, worth it.
“Nothing’s better than that phone call [saying] ‘we’re coming over from Camden to have breakfast,’” Logan said. “If you make good food, everybody knows you.”
To show appreciation for her customers as Castine Variety edges closer to its 100 year mark, Logan is now offering a free donut, including her pineapple juice-infused Hawaiian cake donut, with every beverage order.
The Castine Variety is open this summer every day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
