Calvineers trip to Barcelona approved

by Monique Labbe

After months of discussion across multiple meetings, members of the Castine school board approved a 2019 trip to Barcelona presented by Bill McWeeny and the Calvineers at a meeting December 5.

The trip will provide the members of the Calvineers with an opportunity to take part in the second World Marine Mammal Science Conference, a five-day international event.

The biggest issue concerning the trip was its timeline, as board members wanted to make sure the students participating in the trip missed as little school days as possible. The final dates agreed upon were December 5 (departure) to December 16 (return), with the students only missing five total school days.

Members of the Calvineers and their families have been fundraising for the trip since summer, and will continue to do so throughout the 2018-19 school year.

In addition to the conference, the students will also take part in various day outings of educational value while in Spain.

Final arrangements and plans for the trip will be made by August 7, as decided by McWeeny and board members.
