Dock work continues in Castine Harbor
Grant funding sought for Phase III

by Monique Labbe

The board of selectmen authorized the Harbor Committee to apply for a grant from the Submerged Lands Program-Harbor Management and Access, for the completion of a dock rails project.

The project is a result of damage caused by last fall’s windstorm.

There are three phases to the project, according to Town Manager Jimmy Goodson. The first, which has already been completed, is work to the rails along the town dock. Phase two is currently under way and includes rail work from the town dock to the beginning of the Acadia Dock. Those two phases have already been budgeted for, with some money left over. That leftover, combined with what the town would get from the grant funding, would pay for phase three, which would complete the necessary work on the Acadia Dock.

Goodson said that the grant application needed to be submitted by 5 p.m. April 20. He should hear back in May, he said, at which time the phase three work could begin.

“I hope we get that,” said Selectman Gus Basile. “That’s something we need.”

In other board business, the selectmen authorized the Witherle Memorial Library board to apply for a PBS/American Library Association grant, in the amount of $2,000.

The selectmen also approved a liquor license renewal for The Castine Inn.

The next board of selectmen meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. on May 7.
