Castine Selectmen change town meeting date

by Sharon Bray

The annual budget town meeting will be held Saturday, June 1, instead of May 18.

Selectmen agreed at their Tuesday, January 22 meeting to make the change because the superintendent of schools would not be available in May.

They listed ongoing construction at the town hall and the Castine Garden Club’s annual plant sale as additional factors in selecting the new date.

Town Manager Dale Abernethy said renovations to Emerson Hall, which have taken much longer than expected, should be complete before June 1.

Despite citizen questions about possibly meeting at Maine Maritime’s auditorium with “more comfortable seats” and a better sound system, Chairman of Selectmen Peter Vogell emphasized the importance of meeting “in our town hall.”
