Create a slogan, win a prize
Castine, in five words or less

by Anne Berleant

It’s not easy to capture the heart and spirit of a community in around five words or less, but the Economic Development Committee is challenging community members to do just that.

“We have a fabulous lighthouse, a beautiful waterfront, a college. We have battlegrounds. We’re steeped in history,” said Pat Bishop, committee chairman. The right slogan can capture any or all of these attributes.

“Everyone talks about Camden, and its [catch-phrase], ‘Where the mountains meet the sea,’” she said. “The Economic Development Committee is trying to do the same thing.”

The slogan will be used for marketing, advertising and promotional material.

Bishop explained the five-word limit. “If someone wanted to sell T-shirts, five words will fit on the back.”

The Economic Development Committee stayed busy in December promoting “Light Up Castine,” a series of events devised to help bring shoppers into downtown during the holiday season.

They sponsored weekly visits by Santa, and a tree lighting ceremony on Main Street. They also coordinated annual events, like the town commons tree lighting, the town band holiday performance, Flying Santa’s visit, and the Christmas concert at the Unitarian Universalist meeting house, along with promotions by local businesses.

“I thought the reception that we got was wonderful,” Bishop said, adding that local businesses reported an increase in sales. In addition, community and business members expressed their appreciation through e-mails and phone calls to the committee.

“It did what we wanted it to do—brought people downtown,” Bishop said.

And now, the Castine Economic Development Committee needs your help, Bishop said.

The deadline for slogan entries of “around five words or less” is Thursday, February 2. Entries should e-mailed to pabishop3@yahoo.com or sgoodson5@msn.com.

The winning slogan will receive a $25 gift certificate to Danny Murphy’s.
