Castine Town Band’s Concert on the Common. This year’s concert was under the direction of Silas Yates. During the concert, president Robert Friedlander read a proclamation recognizing the contributions of, and dedicating the concert to, Richard Starke, who founded the band in 1998. Dave Unger’s trumpet solo, right, began the concert with the “Star Spangled Banner” and Grace Harman, a member of the Fife and Drum Corps, and Diana Bogdonoff on cymbals kept the patriotic music moving right along!

Castine’s annual July 4 children’s parade and the day’s other festive events drew lots of people. Many were first-time participants continuing a long-time family involvement. Others were new to the delights of the parade but caught on quickly. Even tiny bikers, pedestrians and those conveyed in a variety of wagons soon learned to smile, wave and enjoy their public.

Castine threw off its late spring weather and stood revealed in its true colors on Independence Day Monday, July 4. Red, white and blue dominated as Castine’s families, friends and relatives lined the streets for the annual children’s parade.

Dozens of children on decorated bicycles came down the parade route first. Many of the riders wore costumes and face make-up. Flags flew, streamers streamed and parents took hundreds of photographs. Large sunglasses dominated tiny faces and headbands supporting a variety of antennae blossomed on many heads.

Lining the streets were parents, grandparents and neighbors, many of whom had marched in previous parades. “The parade gets better each year,” remarked Barbara Cooper. “Our kids bring their kids and it goes from there.”

Other events of the day were equally well-attended. The pie-eating contest saw reigning champion Storme Macomber handing off his crown to the new victor of victuals, Christian Arntzen. “My son was thrilled and he felt perfectly fine afterward,” marveled Christian’s mother, Carolyn. “A whole blueberry pie! Even competed in the sailing races that afternoon. I’ll never get it out of his shirt, but what a nice memory.”

Castine resident Jasper Adam won the Otter House 5K Run. Other events included a potato-sack race, which may have revealed a side of some contestants never seen before by their friends.
